Structural Steel Installation, Clock Tower, Middlesbrough Old Town Hall
Delivering precision steelwork for one of Middlesbrough’s most significant heritage restoration projects.

We recently completed a highly specialised structural steel installation as part of the restoration of the Grade II listed clock tower at Middlesbrough Old Town Hall, a building originally constructed in 1846 and famously featured in an L.S. Lowry painting.

The Project
The wider restoration of Middlesbrough Old Town Hall, led by Middlesbrough Council, has been backed by £4.5m from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Once complete, the building will return to use as office space for Middlesbrough’s growing digital sector, forming a key part of the town’s regeneration. Langtons were instructed to deliver the structural steel for the clock tower alongside main contractor Walter Thompson.

The Installation
Working within a historic structure of this significance adds a considerable layer of complexity, and the structural steelwork was no exception.

The beams and columns were craned in through the roof, carefully lowered onto a forklift, and set onto the pre-installed holding down bolts. The header beam was then installed, and the full structure raised using toe jacks and forklift until it met the underside of the existing beams.

The connection was completed using bolts and then finished off with 8mm fillet welds running the full perimeter, then dressed and finished in galvanised paint to specification.

The Result
A strong, stable structural solution, built to stand the test of time for future generations to come. It was a job that called for real precision from the team, and one we’re proud to have delivered.
